Day 10 - Split

It was a early start for the crew to sail us out at 6:00am but we were able to stay in bed and enjoy a bit of a sleep-in. By about 10:30, the captain had found us a quiet bay to anchor in so that everyone could have a swim - the water is so incredibly clear, I think we’ll have to find some cheep goggles at the next city we visit so we can do a bit of underwater exploring - just dont fancy the shared ones provided. A storm came through during the night -although we didn't notice - so it is much cooler today, a very much more bearable 26 degrees. After a couple of hours lazing in the sun, swimming off the back of the boat, and listening to our amazing cruise director give us a history lesson about the tumultuous history of the region, it was time to set sail to the city of Split and have some lunch along the way (yes, more eating). Split on the mainland and is Croatias 2nd largest city. The history is still amazing. Our tour guide took us through Diocletian’s Palace - a complex that covers about half of the old town of Split that was built at the beginning of the fourth century. Apartments have been created in the remains of the old palace walls and courtyards, and local residents live amongst three thousand year old artefacts everyday. Just extraordinary. Again, our local guide was excellent with an impressive knowledge of the city’s history and architecture along with the best places to eat and drink. We finished the day with a wander around that included the local pass time of sitting in a cafe with a cocktail to "see and be seen", a spot if shopping and some late night tapas before heading back to the boat. It's official, we love Croatia.
