Day 23 - Puglia: Brett's Day - Lecce

Today we set out for Lecce for a bicycle tour through town. On the way we thought we would have a look around Brindisi, the second largest town in Puglua. However, just as we arrived the heavens opened and we had a full on thunder and lightning storm directly above us. Uh oh.  We got back on the road to Lecce without making a stop, hoping that our tour would still be on. Amazongly, we got 5 minutes down the road and we were into a sunny day! The weather has actually been quite bad all around us for a lot of the week, but the storms seem to be really localised and we have managed to be in the right place to avoid them each day.
Off to rhe tour and it was really fun to slowly ride through the (flat) streets of old Lecce. Again, our guide was excellent and we learned all sorts of historical secrets about the town that you would never know if you just wandered without a guide. The tour included a local tasting - we could choose a savoury or sweet option. We chose sweet, which was amazing artisan gelato. Our guide told us all about the regional dishes, and I was pretty happy we chose the sweet option because one of the best loved local specialties is horse stew! He recommended we try it, and I was quite keen - when in Rome...but when it came down to it I just couldn't order it. We decided to stay in Lecce for dinner and all had a laugh though when Tony's "mixed grill" came out. It was a massive plate of different meats served on potato chips! No horse however....
